Grow your own Diary - Problems with Peas

Garden Goddess, Carol Klein, has explained my pea problem. If, she explains, peas or beans are planted too deeply or in heavy soil, the seedlings are simply not strong enough to emerge despite germinating. This problem will be made worse if rain compacts the soil.

The peas I planted in an unused pot have just begun to appear - much to my delight. They were planted in multi purpose compost - very light and fluffy - unlike my clay soil. Carol recommends that in heavy soil, peas and beans are planted in a drill but covered with compost rather than the soil. Hopefully I'm not too late to try this out.

Thank you Carol.

  1. Laurence D Hills ( the grand-daddy of organic gardeners) says you can go on sowing peas until the end of May, and then if they're early, have another go in July for peas in September. The first bit is certainly true.
